Things are good

What could make today any better?  The postman this morning delivered not only an advent calendar from the World’s Best Mum but my fabric from America ready for pillowcases on sale next Sunday at the Cheap Affair!! I also shared a nice cup of coffee with the super kind Ady Bibby of True North and when I returned home with wet feet my spectacular other half had conquered the objectionable and loathsome shelf which has taken a shameful place on the floor of my studio for over two months.  It’s now happily attached to the wall, above my desk, supporting my expensive camera… Go shelf go!!

Not only have I a new range of fabrics for the xmas fair at Islington Mill but a new range of Christmas cards as well.  I’m not sure if I will save their premiere viewing for next Sunday or if I will provide a sneak peek here.  If you’re desperate to order cards, get in touch.

Fini, La Boca

LabocaPicture 5You can download the very last issue of plus1 from their website.  Cover design by LaBoca.  Packed with goodness, as always.  Pretty funny and accurate comment about wayfarer sunglasses in the overrated feature.

“I like working with people who tell the truth”

Just listened to a talk by Johnathan Barnbrook of Barnbrook Design.  If you’re looking for fonts named after homicidal madmen you can download them from his website.  Apparantly this cd-which is among his claims to fame- has a ‘this way up’ label added for US stockists whose empoloyees are too thick to know which way it goes on the shelf…

Crushed

crush1crush2crush10crush7crush8crush5Last year I interned at Brighton design agency Crush for 2 weeks in May.  They do some really nice work.  Here’s some of my favourites, including the big issue cover I got to work on whilst there.

An apple a day

picture-2picture-6picture-1picture-3picture-5picture-4Had the opportunity a few weeks ago to attend a talk with Matt Pyke of Universal Everything.  Matt  trained as an architectural illustrator, worked in London for a while and now he runs his very diverse studio from a wooden shed in Sheffield, directing 50-60 people from animators to sculptors and photographers.  There’s a little profile video on the apple site about his profession’s dependence on all products that are apple…

Chestnuts roasting as a result of dialectic heating from cavity magnetrons

picture-43picture-52picture-62

Admittedly, differenciating between a maser and a laser surpasses my insubstantial ultrasonic apprehension, but AKQA’s christmas greeting worries me slightly… surely, like, radiation and stuff?

I must say though it’s the best card I’ve received this year.  I love it!

Dutch Love

Possibly tailored with the Windows-using account handler in mind, Love Creative’s new website is as user-friendly as they come… complete with pixellated hourglass timers and keyboard buttons.  A particular blog entry re don’t bake a cakeoff made me chuckle.

And on another note, dutch poster design for your eyes on a Thursday afternoon.
